This project is meant to sensitize pupils in primary schools on the concept, climate change, and all the information they would need to be a responsible young citizen of the country, doing what is right and expected of them to save our planet. The project name says it all, You and I can save our planet if we see it as a persona;l responsibility before its been seen as a collective responsibility.

The consequences of climate change can not be over emphasized, hence, if nothing is done quickly, human being existence in threatened. Therefore, the need to sensitize up- coming youths of the importance of Environmental Friendliness through behavioural change.

These are our suggestions...

Roedean pupils continued worksheets for inner city pupils on climate change, using CAP material and children's books. They also collected little pot plants and will send these to ECDs in informal settlements, to plant, and will hold a raffle to raise money to plant trees in the ECD centres.

Class-2: The learning objective of activities in week 2 was to make our students understand climate and climate change and the impact their own activities have on their surroundings, as well as, to encourage them to take action to prevent further climate change.

Even if we don’t see a melting glacier down the street we will still see big changes close to home. Among all the planets only earth has sign for life and plants are considered as key organisms for constituting life on earth. Plants are the autotrophs, they are capable to synthesize organic compounds with the use of simple inorganic molecules. These organic compounds treated as food by heterotrophic organisms (which cannot produce their own food) or by plant itself. The energy generated by plant via Photosynthesis is the driver of life on the earth. Climate change is very multifaceted phenomenon facing all of us. It involves many disciplines beyond science such as society, economics, politics and most importantly moral and ethical issues, climatic fluctuations are global problem, but arise and experience from small scale. Medicinal and aromatic plants are less immune to the climate change as compare to the other living organisms. According to recent study published in Journal Nature Climate Change, Climate change could lead to the globally widespread loss plants occurred around the world. This study collected data of 50,000 common species plants as well as animals. They concluded that more than half of the plants would be get affected till 2080 due to continuously rise in greenhouse gas emissions. Plant growth and its development is strongly dependent upon the temperature, each species has an optimum or specific temperature range to survive and flourish in a particular environment.

Plants react much more sensitively to fluctuations in temperature than animals. They are also unable to seek out warmer or cooler locations. "When temperatures rise, plants grow taller in order to cool themselves off. Their stalks become taller and their leaves become narrower and grow farther apart. Yet, this makes the plant more unstable overall, This is noticeable, for example, during grain harvesting. Unstable plants bend faster in the rain and generally produce less biomass. There is also a reduction in the proportion of key substances, like proteins, that can be stored in the grain kernel.

Effects of climate change

• Changes in climate and weather may force species to migrate to new areas. There is ample evidence already of species’ ranges shifting as a result of changing conditions. Those that cannot escape their newly inhospitable surroundings (trees or species confined to mountain-tops and small islands are obvious examples) or adapt are likely to die off.

• Because species depend on each other for survival, individual extinctions and shifting ranges have a much wider knock-on effect, upsetting the delicate balance of our natural world. In a worst-case scenario, we could see food webs and ecosystems collapse completely.

• Changes in climate can threaten native species, as invasive ones (both predators and competitors) expand into their range, and may also create ideal conditions for disease outbreaks.

• Species that are already threatened (e.g. those hunted to the brink of extinction, or confined to a few remaining pockets of habitat) and those that are highly sensitive to environmental change are particularly vulnerable to the extreme events, invasive species, disease outbreaks and further habitat loss resulting from climate change.

In addition, biodiversity is also exposed to the secondary, human-driven impacts of a changing climate., in the shape of displaced communities and changing behavior in response to lower crop yields (such as agricultural expansion and increased reliance on wild resources).

Climate change has its impact on human lifestyle too. It threatens our health by affecting the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the weather we experience.

• As our globe warms, glaciers melt and ocean water expands, leading seas to rise about 7 to 8 inches on average since 1900 – about 3 inches of that since 1993. The added volume of water creeping up coastlines slowly swallows land, homes, and fuels more flooding inland. This has an impact on human lifestyle as it disrupts the infrastructure and housing and city planning of an area. 
• The same CO2 accumulating in our atmosphere thanks to fossil fuels is actually changing the composition of fruits and vegetables that we eat, making them less nutritious. Extra CO2 is speeding up photosynthesis and causing plants to grow with more sugar and less calcium, protein, zinc, and important vitamins.

Climate changes will also affect tree physiology and phenology, forest growth, and biodiversity, with knock-on impacts on forest-dependent people and wider society. The severity of these impacts will vary among subregions and ecosystems. The climate crisis has, and will continue to stoke political extremism, xenophobia, and ethnic nationalism. It will shake the foundations of societies all over the world and push institutions to their breaking point. It will be a catastrophe - for both the refugees and nations that it will overwhelm.

The grade 12 Students from DPS International have prepared a video, where they are talking about the reasons for climate change and their effects on wildlife plants and humans etc. 

They have also prepared one more video, where they have called experts and activists who are leaders in their fields as well as people who have lived to see the change in the climate over the past 60 years to share their thoughts about our ever-changing environment. 

The children have demonstrated that necessary actions to mitigate climate change must be on a war-footing. The students have also stressed the importance of planting trees.  As a contribution from their part, they have decided that they will make the best of waste and follow the principles of reuse, recycle and reduce.

students created a questionnaire to collect information about the recent changes in the climate in our region (Delhi NCR, India) and tried to investigate the probable reasons. They came up with interesting facts. the pollution has strated to increease beacuse of burning of husk.

Millennium World School, Faridabad took up the Climate Action Project in order to bring awareness in students regarding the effects of climate change locally and globally on the environment. Under this project in week -2 students of the school were shown videos related to various effects of climate change, planted a sapling at their homes in order to save their environment, drew posters showing the effects of climate change, made recyclable flowers. They were explained the benefits of planting trees and that trees are our best friends. They also promised to take care of their plants and grow a new plant every year on their birthdays.

Students discussed the ways in which more trees can be planted and what may be the initiatives taken by them individually and collectively.

The Children were shown a video and powerpoint presentation on the causes and effects of Global Warming. The awareness was created to grow more trees and save the our natural resources. The children pledged and said slogans like " Save trees, save the Earth" "We are responsible citizens of India" "Save Water It is the need of the hour"

Global climate is projected to continue to change over this century and beyond. The magnitude of climate change beyond the next few decades depends primarily on the amount of heat-trapping gases emitted globally, and how sensitive the Earth’s climate is to those emissions.

Sea levels are rising and oceans are becoming warmer. Longer, more intense droughts threaten crops, wildlife and freshwater supplies. From polar bears in the Arctic to marine turtles off the coast of Africa, our planet’s diversity of life is at risk from the changing climate.

Climate change poses a fundamental threat to the places, species and people’s livelihoods WWF works to protect. To adequately address this crisis we must urgently reduce carbon pollution and prepare for the consequences of global warming, which we are already experiencing. WWF works to:

• advance policies to fight climate change
• engage with businesses to reduce carbon emissions
• help people and nature adapt to a changing climate

Over the course of a few months, Navrachana School Sama has contributed to the green cover with full enthusiasm and determination. Having been emotionally touched with the drastic impact that humans have on the environment, the students of Navrachana School Sama established a legacy of planting over 50 trees on our beloved principal's birthday annually.

Not only that, the school conducted numerous workshops and seminars with prominent Indian identities in the field of environment preservation to spread awareness amongst the students. One of the workshops that the students actively participated in was the "Seed Ball Making" worskshop conducted in the month of October.

Navrachana School Sama has also planted 3 vertical gardens in the past year by re-using plastic bottles for the same, thereby contributing to the environment and climate change through afforestation and upcycling.

Diya of Grade VI from GEMS International School,India is sharing the main reason to climate change in our Atmosphere.

This week we focused on the impacts of climate change from local to global.

The main area of focus was upon the main effects climate change brings along. The increased changes in the ecosystem sums up the entire range of effects which occur throughout on the planet. However, the students were taught some of the main reasons of cause and effects of climate change with the help of a video and a presentation

Week 2 went very productive. The meetings were held to orient about the tasks assigned for week 2. They planted the saplings and shared the pictures. Students discussed their findings and research work, they watched the work done by other schools from India and school from other countries. They researched the effects of climate change in Asia on plants, animals, weather patterns and human activities. Studends created google form and conducted interviews from relatives and one student conducted the interview of a Scientist in ICAR ( Indian Council of Agricultural Research).

Climate change is leading to intense heatwaves, loss of biodiversity, stresses the food-producing system, etc.

The students of Ajanta Public School, Gurgaon are the real stewards of this environment. In their own, small steps they want to create an awareness among all that we share a very special bond with nature. They go with the slogan- "I am because We are."

Nature is God’s most beautiful creation. It felicitates the growth, development and nourishment of all its creatures.
This week our children painted and decorated the earthen pots and planted saplings. As part of this activity, students have also participated in slogan speaking.

The main aim of this activity was to connect the students with the tools and process engaging with the mother earth and understand its importance in our life.
The students took an oath to look after the saplings they have planted and plant more saplings and encourage others to do the same.

Shivanjali from DPS International, Gurgaon planted oxygen plants and made sure to involve her family. She has explained it beautifully in the PPT.

Climate has an immense effect on the flora, fauna, weather patterns, human activity and lifestyle. An average increase in the Earth's temperature during the last century has led to the melting of ice caps and glaciers, causing floods, widespread destruction and loss of life on earth. It is high time we understood the importance of our environment and corrected our actions to save nature as well as our existence on earth.

Week 2- What are the effects of climate change? Global tree planting activity #PlantEd

The main area of focus was upon the main effects climate change brings along. The increased changes in the ecosystem sum up the entire range of effects that occur throughout the planet. However, the students were taught some of the main reasons for the cause and effects of climate change with the help of a video and a presentation. Students participated in the Global Plantation Activity under PlantEd with full enthusiasm. Students of Grade 3 & 4 have told the causes and effects of Climate Change ---Global Warming, Deforestation, Flood, Extinction of Animals, Global Warming, Melting of Ice, Migrating Animals, etc in a video presentation. Students of Grade 5,6,7 took up the Seedling project to understand the consequences of different environmental conditions on the growth of different plants and the long term impact of pollution on living organisms. Students also made a Pollution Catcher as a project.

Students were able to identify the causes of climatic change and the factors which contribute to the change of Ecosytem as well as the change in the climate.Students explained the causes for the destruction of Flaura and Fauna due to climatic change and also explained the causes for the imbalance of nature and how it accelerates the process of natural calamities like flood, flashflood, landslide and Earthquake.Due to human activities weather pattern changes which paved the way for occurence of droughts. Burning of plastics causes increase in carbon dioxide and the rise of green house gases also paved the way for the change in climate.

Climate change is a natural occurrence seen before, however for different reasons. History is a pattern, but the answer to the question ‘why?’ is what defines the reappearing event of Climate Change. 

In the past, Climate Change has occurred because of environmental changes, such as volcanic eruptions or other natural disasters, along with the effect of humans and their way of living. Today, however, Climate Change is mainly seen as a human created disaster, being the mark of our technological and lifestyle advancements.Climate Change has become an inevitable situation only because of our idea of advancing constantly.This situation still has a variable we can control,the extent it goes to.Today, we can see many changes being made in our environment and ways of living, to stop Climate Change, as it has already begun with a strong start.This can be seen through the many animals being endangered through diverse food webs being disrupted, ice caps, sheets and glaciers melting and sea levels rising, not to mention strong natural disasters becoming more common and powerful .

The emissions of greenhouse gases have led to Global Warming (a part of Climate Change), leading to many food webs and habitats ( deforestation, urbanization etc are some causes behind it) being affected badly. As said by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, ‘Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal,’ proving that Climate Change has not only already begun, but has already posed as a dent in our world. The effects of Climate Change that has been recorded in the last century are nothing like seen before, proving that Climate Change may have occurred before, but never this way.

3. Polls were launched to decide the 4 major effects of climate change. (5-6 major effects to be given and 4 to be selected according to the percentage of poll).
4. Next 15 min. were utilized to finalise the interview questions.5 Questions relevant to the topic were selected.
5. Last 15 min. Interaction with students to solve their query on PlantED program, uploading… etc.
6. Before concluding a common question on What is your experience in this 2 week session? (They will have to prepare 1-2 min. speech). Based on this they were selected for interacting with students from other countries.

Note: Separate sessions to be conducted for 3 categories that is Grade 3 and 4 ,5 and 6 And Grade 7-9.

We realized that students really started getting sensitized and started contributing to the cause. We booked a virtual interaction with the school from Brazil. Students are already excited. Hoping to have a wonderful interacting session.

EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE-GRADE 2 F- KUSHAGRA PUROHIT

1. Increase in the frequency of natural hazards over the least decade
2. Increase in the impact of natural disasters. In the last few years, disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis etc have been becoming stronger when it comes to their impact on human life. More people are being are being afflicted by these hazards. Due to the increase in strength of these disasters, it becoming harder to contain and fight such situations.
3. Seasons are becoming extreme in nature. If it’s raining, cities seem to go underwater. If it’s summers, every year we have a new highest temperature ever recorded.
4. The average sea level has been rising drastically due to global warming. We are losing our polar ice capes faster than ever.
5. Our planet is warming up due to increase in temperature cause by global warming and deforestation.  
    

I have taken a small initiative to adopt three plants and it is my responsibility to look after them throughout my life. It will be my duty to tend to all their needs and to make sure that they grow into mature full grown trees. I have attached the pictures of my baby plants soon to turn into mature trees below

Our students conducted a survey on the effects of Climate Change, Where three generations have participated from each family. Students have analysed the survey and shared with others . They did research on the local flora, fauna , weather pattern and life style and the influnce of climate change on the same. 

The first week of the climate action project was brilliant! We had a lot of fun. Our second week was more productive than the first as we understood the program better.

The students of C.N.M.S from Mumbai are presenting  the effects of climate change by a model through a video.

• These effects were discussed with class VII students with the help of presentations, articles and youtube videos.
• The students researched, collaborated and made a presentation on the various effects of climate change.

To emphasize on the current issue of Global Climate change and to sensitize the young generation towards it, an interesting activity was conducted in Sanjivani International School in Grade 4, 5 and 6.

To make the students understand and the effects of climate change and various factors related to the same a model was presented by Advait and Soham of grade 6.

The activity was interactive, Aashi from grade 6 by means of PPT was able to make children aware of the after effects of human activities on the environment. Students enjoyed and participated in the activity enthusiastically.

The children are reciting poems on weather and climate , explaining changes in weather in various parts of the world.

Here, we had a discussion on the impact of climate change all over the world. We discussed some of the most evident effects of climate change. After that most of the students also planted trees as a part of global plantation.

 Climate change destabilises the Earth’s temperature equilibrium and has far-​reaching effects on human beings and the environment. During the course of global warming, the energy balance and thus the temperature of the earth change, due to the increased concentration of greenhouse gases, which has a significant impact on humans and the environment.  

It is not scientifically possible to assign individual weather events to the current climate change, however, it can be statistically proven that global warming will increase the probability of extreme weather events.

Effect of global warming on climate change, flora and fauna

Everything on planet Earth is interconnected, and when one thing is changed, it alters everything else. This is known as the butterfly effect, and it is seen everyday. How does global warming set off a chain reaction effects plants and animals around the world? Like humans, plants and animals need certain conditions to be comfortable and productive. If the thermostat at office is set too low, than a person gets cold and cannot work as well. The same thing happens with plants and animals. If it is too warm or too cold, they cannot reproduce at the same rate. When plants slow down there growth, they are not replenished rapidly enough to support all the animals which usually feed on them. Fewer plants means that area can support fewer plant eating animals. Less plant eaters leads to a decrease in the number of predatory animals. If the growth of the trees are affected than the entire food chain is thrown off balance. Humans are a part of the food chain as well, and when we kill off plants and animals through the changes in the climate we have brought about, we ultimately shorten our own life.

Students of Grades 3 to 5 brainstormed on all the effects of Climate Change and took action to make a difference by planting trees and pledging to look after nature!

Students researched on effects of climate chane on flora, fauna, wethaer patterns and human activity. One of the student also interviewed his parent to find out more and make connections to changes in local community.

Students inquired into the various effects of climate change happening around them.They made connection to the effects on health ,animals and plants.During the inquiry they conducted interview of their family member to take another perspective on the topic of inquiry. They shared their learning and understanding through videos,posters,poems and PPT.

We created a padlet for our activity of Planting for Weekk 2. We were little as our partner in Israel is doing the same activity. We named this activity - My pot Garden - Each one Plant one.
As it is covid time my children decided to plant small plant in a chipped mug. They named the plant and pledged to take care of it. Students understood about how reusing our old mugs to make a beautiful planting activity

Slowly our team is gaining momentum and now they are collaborating to explore the causes of climate change.

To make our younger learners understand the cause of climate change, a story session was conducted where they were made aware of the consequences of human activities and possible actions that could be taken at personal level and ahead.

Learners shared their reflections and takeaways after the session and took a pledge for climate action.

Learners researched the effects of climate change by making observations at local levels (effect on plants, animals, human activities, weather changes) and discussed their findings in groups. They created posters and made drawings to show their concerns and shared their reflections in the class.

Goal 3: Access new perspectives to determine course of action.

Learners prepared a questionnaire to interview relatives from different generations. They collected the results of their interview and discussed them in the class.

They seemed to be excited to implement the findings to bring positive changes in their immediate surroundings.

In Week 2 students of DPS Howrah researched on various effects of Climate change. They interviewed their parents and grand parents to understand the effects of climate change- then and now. They have written poems on different issues of climate change. DPS Howrah has extended the "Green Challenge" to community of students, teachers, parents and friends where one is required to plant a sapling and post a picture in facebook with #DPSHGreenChallenge and extend the challenge to further 3 more people.
