I am a former research scientist who now teach a science program called Day of Discovery, which is a partnership between Vanderbilt University our local school district here in Nashville TN. My co-teachers and I teach three classes of 7th & 8th graders from three different schools four hours, one day each week throughout the school year. Our students have expressed interest in being part of conservation and climate action projects. One unusual thing about our classes is that they are held at the Nashville Zoo. Our classes are outside except during bad weather which gives our students a unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the complexity of the species on our planet. While we are a very non-traditional classroom, our students do have access to computers.
